Health Informatics Applied to Nursing

Overview

This course connects health informatics and nursing informatics to support research, professional practice, decision-making, and project development in the Professional Doctorate in Nursing. The pathway starts with the problem and the data, moves through systems, interoperability, connected care, and artificial intelligence, and concludes with responsible implementation and governance.

Objective

Develop the ability to decide when, why, which, and how to use—or not use—data, information systems, and digital technologies to improve research, professional practice, decision-making, and projects in the Professional Doctorate in Nursing, with critical evaluation, safety, ethics, equity, and accountability.

Syllabus

1. Problems, data, decisions, and Health Informatics: data, information, knowledge, a sociotechnical lens, and problem-driven technology selection.
2. Data and tools for research and decision-making: life cycle, quality, documentation, protection, collection, analysis, visualization, and reference management.
3. Information systems, RNDS, terminologies, and interoperability: electronic health records, meaning, provenance, security, and continuity.
4. Technology applied to professional projects and connected care: telehealth, telenursing, mHealth, remote monitoring, accessibility, and equity.
5. Critical AI applied to doctoral work and practice: uses, privacy, authorship, verification, bias, oversight, and usage protocols.
6. Integration, implementation, and governable decisions: alternatives, responsibilities, indicators, monitoring, and review criteria.

Assessment

The proposed assessment combines preparation and participation, cumulative artifacts, guided readings, and a decision brief with a final presentation. Weights, deadlines, and institutional criteria will be confirmed by the instructors.
